Antique treasures on Pimlico Road
6.06.2024
Words by Bertie Russell
In the next area guide from Russell Simpson, we introduce you to the best shops, restaurants and attractions in the neighbourhoods where we work. This time we look at Pimlico Road and our favourite destinations in this picturesque street on the edge of Belgravia and Chelsea.
Designers, dealers and crafts people
Pimlico Road is home to some of London’s finest antiques dealers, furniture makers and interior designers. Originally it had a bohemian reputation – cheaper and scruffier than neighbouring Sloane Square – but now it’s one of the neighbourhood’s smartest streets.
Long-established residents include legendary designers Colefax & Fowler, Robert Kime, and Linley by David Linley. But there are also more recent additions, such as the antique fireplaces on sale at Jamb, the modern British design studio Pinch and the hand-crafted furniture by Tom Faulkner. We also recommend visiting Soane Britain, which collaborates with makers and workshops across the country to create beautiful furniture, fabrics and lighting. Finally, why not check out the dazzling bespoke rugs for sale at Luke Irwin – fans include King Charles and Barack Obama.
La Poule au Pot
A local institution, this French bistro has been going since the Sixties. Serving classic cuisine in a characterful setting, the restaurant evokes a farmhouse deep in rural France. Traditional but full of charm, it’s the perfect place to take a date.
Pullman Editions
This company designs and commissions original posters that capture the golden age of travel. Each poster has a stylish Art Deco design, evoking all the glamour of yachting on the Riviera or skiing in the Alps. Printed on limited run, the images are ideal for decorating a games room or family living space.
Farmers’ market
Every Saturday morning, Orange Square, at the centre of Pimlico Road, host its weekly farmers’ market. As well as the usual mix of bakers and, butchers, cheesemongers and greengrocers, there are more unusual stalls selling chutney or milkshakes. But the focus is firmly on English produce, all coming from within a hundred miles of London.
Artist Residence
A short walk away from Pimlico Road you will find a boutique hotel called Artist Residence. Inside they have a bright café, a comfy club room and an atmospheric cocktail bar. But, if it’s sunny, we recommend sitting on the terrace for one of their delicious brunches.
