Stamp Duty for Buyers
Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is a progressive tax paid when purchasing a freehold, leasehold, or shared ownership residential property over £250,000 in England and Northern Ireland (separate taxes apply in Wales and Scotland).
The tax is set up as a sliding system based on thresholds and dependent on a property's price. The tax rates are payable only on the portion of a property price that falls within each Stamp Duty Tax band. Stamp duty is payable to the HMRC 14 days from the date of completion.
Stamp Duty for Tenants
A tenant also has to pay SDLT once the cumulative rent over years in the same property exceeds the current thredhold.
The SDLT rate applied in this case is 1%.
