The Inside view on life at Auriens Chelsea

2.10.2025

Words by Alan Russell

We speak to residents of Auriens Chelsea about their reasons for residing and pleasures of living at this unique address

Simply kind and friendly

Every resident at Auriens Chelsea has their own story of how they came to live here. One long-time local recalls watching the building going up, brick by brick, and knowing instantly where they wanted to be when the time came to downsize. “I didn’t even look anywhere else. Here I could keep the same friends, the same restaurants, the same shops - the same everything.”

Already familiar with a few people who had purchased apartments, this resident was able to visit and meet others before moving in. “I was able to ask for their opinions before I made the move, and I never heard a negative word.” Those acquaintances quickly became close friends. “It’s wonderful to make good new friends at this stage of life. But there’s no pressure - nobody is forced to socialise, which was important to me. Everyone is simply kind and friendly. Auriens also offers a beautiful suite of apartments with amenities; this is not an old folks’ home.”

A family atmosphere

For others, the appeal of Auriens lies in the combination of community and convenience. Another resident reflects: “I was lonely as a widow. Living alone for the first time, it’s wonderful to have friendly, interesting people around you. To come into the foyer and be greeted by the concierge. To walk into the dining room and be invited to sit down by one of your friends.” Meanwhile, some residents value having everything on their doorstep. “You don’t have to go out to exercise, or even to visit the cinema - all those things are here. For someone less mobile, it is ideal.”

The calendar of events and activities at Auriens Chelsea is plentiful. One resident enjoys the art classes, while another has discovered a love for singing. “There are ten to twelve of us who go regularly - nobody is pitch-perfect, but it doesn’t matter. We sing Blue Moon, Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend, even songs from Les Mis. I love it.” Residents also speak enthusiastically about cultural outings, from exhibitions to group trips to Dublin and Cornwall, as well as evening recitals and talks featuring guests such as Gyles Brandreth, Zandra Rhodes, and Wayne Sleep.

Within the building, residents find spaces that feel like their own. For some, it’s the lobby, perfect for reading the paper with a cup of tea or simply watching the world go by. Others favour the garden, a beautiful oasis where they can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or even supper on a warm summer’s evening. And for those seeking quiet reflection, the library offers a peaceful retreat for reading, playing chess or bridge, or listening to one of the resident pianists.

A respectful and respectable place

The staff at Auriens are clearly central to the residents’ experience. “If I were told the staff were selected for their charm, I would believe it,” says one. “They’re helpful, flexible and always available. It helps to create a family atmosphere.” Another agrees: “Nothing is ever too much trouble. Whether it’s changing a lightbulb, ordering a taxi, or carrying your shopping, there’s always someone ready to help.”

The overall atmosphere is what residents say sets Auriens apart. “It’s a very contented place, a very relaxed place,” one explains. “There’s no need to dress up, but you wouldn’t walk around in a dressing gown either. Everyone respects each other - a respectful and respectable place sums up Auriens.”

When asked whether they would recommend it to friends, the residents don’t hesitate. “Absolutely. It’s like living in heaven. The only thing I would say is don’t leave it too late - the older you get, the more of a challenge it becomes to move. And it’s such an enjoyable place, you might as well get on with it.” That same resident has chosen to spend Christmas at Auriens this year. “I heard it was such fun last year - a beautiful tree, carols, everything done so well. I thought, why bother going anywhere else?”
